Why acoustics can't simply be "fixed with equipment"

A common misconception: "the sound system will make up for it." Good equipment can compensate for a lot — but a room with extreme reverberation, from high stone walls, glass surfaces and hard floors with no soft furnishings, stays acoustically challenging even with high-quality gear.

Why acoustics can't be "solved" by simply turning up the volume

A common reflex when facing acoustic problems is to just turn things up. In a reverberant room, that usually makes the effect worse rather than fixing it — more volume also means more reflected sound. The real solution almost always lies in deliberate speaker positioning, adjusted EQ, and the sound-absorbing elements described above, not a higher output level.

Tent and outdoor venues: a different acoustic logic

At celebrations in a tent or fully outdoors, different rules apply than in an enclosed hall. There's almost no reverberation here, since sound escapes freely upward and sideways — the challenge instead is getting enough volume to the back of the area without overwhelming the front rows. Wind can also carry sound in unexpected directions.

What if two venues technically contradict each other?

At some weddings, the ceremony happens in an acoustically simple room while the reception itself is in a heavily reverberant hall, or the other way round. In that case, it's worth planning the sound separately for each location rather than using one system configuration for both spaces.

Small, low-cost measures with a big effect

Not every acoustic challenge needs expensive structural work. Even simple elements make a noticeable difference:

  • Long curtains in front of large glass or stone surfaces.
  • Carpets or runners on hard floors, at least around the dance floor.

Acoustics and hosting: why speech reacts differently than music

A point often overlooked in acoustic checks: spoken language reacts differently to reverberation than music does. While music often experiences some reverb as pleasantly "full", speech in a heavily reverberant room quickly becomes hard to understand — syllables blur together. That means a room that sounds perfectly fine for dance music may still need a separate technical solution for speeches and hosting.
